TOPSY
A Message from Our Founder
The design of this hoodie carries profound meaning behind its simple yet impactful story, which I'm excited to share with the SUMTIMESSAD community.
The Meaning Behind the Name:
I (Courtney) am proud Arabana woman and grew up in Mparntwe, (Alice Springs Northern Territory). When I turned 17, I moved Kaurna Adelaide, South Australia) and lived there for the last 7 years. My boyfriend and I have recently moved back to my home town Alice and have been extremely determined to give back to my community now.
I wanted to create a very special hoodie for NAIDOC week 2024. I continue to learn and embrace my Aboriginal culture and create a community that everyone can feel a part of. I've named this hoodie after my Great, Great Grandmother, Topsy Smith. Topsy was a pioneer from Central Australia and had an incredible impact in her community. She provided support, education, and care to young Aboriginal children who were less fortunate. Even though her life was full of hardship, she was the definition of resilience, sympathy, love, and courage (what our hoodie collection are named after) I hope to continue her legacy by offering support, reassurance, and guidance to the SUMTIMESSAD community as well.
About the Artist:
Emma Nganyintja Stubbs is a proud Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara, Arabana, and Adnyamathanha woman who lives and works in Mparntwe with her family of seven. Emma began creating art as a young girl in her community of Amata, where she was exposed to a small art center called the Tjurma Art Centre, which is no longer operational. This center was known for creating beautiful artworks using silk batik. Emma's love for storytelling grew from drawing patterns in wax on silk (batik) to painting on canvas with acrylic paints, and now to creating digital art using an iPad. Being able to share her art and use her skills to tell the stories of others has been a dream come true for Emma.
The Meaning of the Design:
The 'U' shape symbols on the hoodie represent the people in our lives. At SUMTIMESSAD, we emphasize the importance of supporting each other through both good and challenging days. We encourage our community to embrace vulnerability and understand that we don't have to face life's challenges alone. Aboriginal artwork has a unique ability to convey one's journey and story through beautiful art.
Whether Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal, this hoodie resonates with our lives and the experiences we've encountered.
Lots of love,
Courts xx
